Conroe became a 2006 Main Street City as through the Texas Historical Commission. Conroe was designated as an official Texas Main Street City and began the program in January of 2006. This statewide program is a division of the Texas Historical Commission that promotes downtown revitalization within the context of historic preservation. The initial program is three year program to provide a staff person to facilitate the program and serve as a contact relative to restoration, economic development, board training, strategic planning, interior design, marketing and organizational assistance and other areas where the local community may not have local expertise. What is the Main Street Approach? Main street program offers an approach to downtown revitalization that has been successful in more that 1,000 towns and cities thought the United States. Four Point Approach Organization, Promotion, Design & Economic Restructuring Organization means working towards the same goal. It is a common-sense formula of volunteer-driven and an organizational structure of board committees can ease the tough work of building consensus and cooperation among the groups. Promotion means selling the positive image of Downtown to all through marketing of events, shoppers investors and using a retail promotional activity and marketing campaign. Design means getting downtown in top shape capitalizing on its best assets - such as historic buildings and traditional downtown layout through and inviting atmosphere. Economic Restructuring means finding a new purse for Conroe based enterprises. Helping existing businesses and building economic development downtown by recruiting new businesses downtown. The Main Street Program is not a grant. It does provide opportunities to apply for grants when available. The Main Street Program and it's committees seeks to make downtown a better place to shop, work and live making it a place in which to be proud.
