Mission Statement To enhance the economic strength, vitality and the employment stability of the downtown redevelopment area through the support and retention of existing businesses and the attraction of new ones. This is especially true for businesses in the retail and professional services sectors. Moreover, the redevelopment and promotion of the arts, entertainment, and cultural activities are essential in creating a dynamic downtown and bringing new capital and employment opportunities into the downtown area. Time line leading up to Present 2006 Main Street City 1999 - Downtown Revitalization program started with meetings relative to new building facades, financed streetscape improvement from the community to improve public buildings. In 1999, to develop and implement that strategy, the City Council took advantage of America's Downtown-New Thinking, New Life. This is a technical assistance program offered by the National League of Cities and Hyatt Palma, Inc. Mayor Carter Moore added that the City and the Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce began a partnership by focusing on the downtown's economic needs. Timeline of Revitalization & leading up to being a Main Street City The revitalization of the area is moving ahead. This is evidenced by a broad array of investments, improvements and actions occurring downtown. The following is a partial list of improvements that have been completed in downtown Conroe: In 2006, the city retained Destination Development consulting to give recommendations regarding Downtown Economic Development and implementation of the plan. Main Street City 2006 In 2006 Conroe, Texas became a Main Street City and under the direction of the Downtown Manager, Larry Calhoun, the four Main Street Committees got to work. The Main Street Advisory Board oversees the Design, Organization, Promotion and Economic Restructuring Committees. These committees meet once a month.
