Assistant Chief Sims joined the Conroe Fire Department in February 1988 as a fire dispatcher, but soon took an opening on the floor as a suppression fire fighter.  He attained the rank of Lieutenant in June of 2003, then the rank of Battalion Chief in August of 2008.  He has earned an Associate Degree from North Harris Montgomery Community College in Fire Science Technology; he also attended and completed the first Texas Fire Chiefs Leadership Academy of the Texas Fire Chiefs Association; and is currently attending a Certified Public Manager's Course through SHSU.  He has attained his Master Fire Fighter certification and a Level II Instructor's certification through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.

On a personal note, Assistant Chief Sims has had a long love for the fire service in which he started at the age of 13, by joining the junior volunteer fire fighter program with Lake Conroe Fire Department.  Then at the age of 16, he joined the Grangerland Volunteer Fire Department; and at 19, he volunteered for Conroe Fire Department.  Sims' father was a career fire fighter that worked for several departments in the state, including Conroe for a couple of years.  His father eventually became an Arson Fire Investigator for a private entity.

Sims' great uncle, Perrin Cranford, was the Conroe Fire Chief from 1950 - 1972 and was also the Mayor of Conroe from 1966 - 1971.
