Assignments/Positions
Team Commander
Overall supervisor for the SWAT Team, responsible for all activities, operations and training of the Team. Serve as staff advisor to the Chief of Police.
Team Leader
Serves as assistant to Team Commander. Tactical supervision of sub-groups (Entry Team, React Team, etc.). Responsible for deployment of Team and equipment. Provide operational command in absence of Team Commander. Specific tasks rotate with each operation. Usually equipped during an operation with handgun and long gun.
Training Coordinator
Coordinates training activities through Team Leaders and Commander. Maintains training calendar and notification of training to all members. Serves as liaison with instructors from outside the Department.
Equipment Specialist
Responsible for the research, testing, proposal, purchasing, care, maintenance and issuance of equipment and transportation.
Point
Guides the team during tactical movement. Usual equipment includes handgun, shield, and mirror.
Cover
Provides short and intermediate fire support to cover Team movement. Will be responsible for voice commands given to encountered subjects. Is partnered with a Point Officer. Usual equipment includes handgun and long gun (MP-5 sub-machine gun, M-16/AR-15, Shotgun). May also carry mirror, ram, and window wand.
The Point and Cover team will act as sub-groups when necessary to clear a room, arrest suspects, secure hallways, etc.
Rear Guard
Provide for the defense of the Team against close range or attack from the rear. Deliver gas, smoke, and door jambs, webbing and other gear as directed by the assignment. The assignment will dictate if Rear Guard is armed with long gun (shotgun) or shield. If two Rear Guards are utilized, they will partner and can be called upon to work as an additional Point and Cover Team. This pack mule of the team must be able to perform in a variety of assignments.
Marksman
Provides long-range fire support to the Team. Capable of delivering effective surgical fire at extended ranges as directed by Team Commander. Operates as the eyes of the Team in the absence of an Observer position. Armed with scoped high-powered rifle.
Observer
Provides logistical support to the Marksman. Observes the target position and provides communications between the Marksman and the Team Commander and Command Post. Armed with long gun (AR-15).
Perimeter
Provides containment and security to the inner-perimeter. Reports suspect movements and other information to the Command Post. Usually armed with long gun (AR-15, MP-5 sub-machine gun, Shotgun).
Negotiations Team Leader
Responsible for the deployment of the Negotiations Team and equipment. Responsible for the overall administration, coordination and training of the Negotiations Team. Provide updates to Team Commander as to status of negotiations, recommends tactics that may enhance negotiations and provides information as to rationality and quality of communication with the suspect(s).
Negotiator
Provide effective negotiations in order to resolve barricade and/or hostage situations.
Communication Officer
Provide detailed chronicles of radio traffic during situation. Documents information provided from all sources as to location, suspects, hostages, activities, warrants, etc. Maintains radio and telephone contact with Officers and Department. Also provides for disbursement of food and beverages during lengthy operations.
Medics
Provides on-site medical treatment of any person injured or suspected of being injured or illness during the operation. Immediately enters hostile area as soon as Entry Team reports "Clear." Also responsible for monitoring the well being of Officers during training sessions. Reports potential medical concerns to the Team Commander.
